Hey Guys! Between birthdays, valentines day, Thank you Letters, and general everyday letters that need to be sent. I have found my card collection coming down to the cards I never used because the envelopes were lost. I started on Pinterest to see if there was an easy way to make your own envelopes. Sadly all the tutorials I found basically had you take apart an envelope that fit the card and use it as a template. Problem…what if I don’t have an envelope that fits that card? So through a little trail and error I figured out how to make an envelope from any paper you want with only the card that needs to go into it. Here’s all you will need.

Materials

  • PencilDIY Envelopes
  • Straight edge of some kind
  • Bone Folder or something for pressing down creases such as a glue stick
  • Ruler (This can also be your straight edge)
  • Chosen Paper (for my card I used a 12 x 12 sheet)
  • Your card that needs an envelopes
  • Mess free Adhesive (I’m using scrap-booking glue dots, you can also use school glue stick that dries clear)
  • Scissors

Process

Step 1:

Trace your card of choice and then add 1/8 inch to each side. Label the top and bottom, then section it into equal quarters.

Step 2:

Next measure from one end, (left or right) to 1/2 inch past center. Then draw a line out that far from the center of the left and right edges. Repeat for the top and bottom.

Step 3:

Now using your straight edge draw a line connecting the end of the lines you just drew in step 2 to each corner of your base shape.

Step 4:

Cut out the final, outer shape and fold in the triangles at the lines of your base shape.

Step 5:

Using your adhesive of choice attach the left and right triangles together. Be careful not to attach it to the rest of the envelope.

Step 6:

Now attach the bottom triangle to the left and right triangles. Again be careful not to attach it to the rest of the envelope.

But what if I don’t have a card? Just a hand written letter?

Well I have something for you too. Here we go!!

Materials:

  • Your Written Letter (I use standard 8 by 11 paper)
  • Bone Folder or something to make good creases with
  • Adhesive

Process:

Step 1:

Take your letter and turn it long ways. The fold two corners towards center like when you make a paper airplane. Make sure you crease it well.

Step 2:

Fold up the bottom edge to meet the two triangles you folded in

Step 3:

Fold the left and right edges to the center.

Step 4:

Now fold your top triangle down and secure with adhesive. If you are using glue I recommend putting it under a heavy box while it dries. Other recommendations are: a piece of tape, wax seal, etc… Once it’s dry you can address the front as needed for your uses!

TADA!!!

Two methods for having your own envelopes. Make sure you let any adhesives dry completely before using and crease each fold well for and clean sharp finish.

Do you have tons of cards without envelopes? What are some other things you do with these cards?
