Hey Guys! So, today I’m going to show you how to make¬†your own etched glass at home. I love etching glass to keep things personalized, and it can make a cheap gift that looks amazing. You can etch any smooth glass; they can be drinking glasses, mugs, vases, wine glasses, etc… The possibilities are endless!! I’ve even done smooth mason jars that I filled with each persons favorite candy. This has also come in handy to give the gamers and anime fans something that includes their favorite game or such without breaking the bank. Not to mention that the glass I tend to use is usually available at the dollar store! This bottle of etch cream has lasted through 5 Mason jars, 5 drinking glass, and several other random projects. Best part, I still have over half of the bottle left. So, let’s look at how to do this.

Materials:

  • Clean and Dry ClearDIY Etched Glass Glass, of your choosing
  • Scissors
  • Stencil, see below on how to make your own
  • Painters Tape
  • Etching Cream
  • Brush
  • Warm Water

Process:

DIY Etched Glass
Cut and Attach your Stencil to your clean glass. Then tape it out with painters tape. The tape helps give you a safety boarder for if you bump out of the stencil.
DIY Etched Glass
Brush a think coat of the etching cream over the stencil and let sit for at least one minute.
DIY Etched Glass
To make your own stencil use layers of painter tape, vinyl, and/or contact paper. Trace out your design and cut it out. Remember that the part you cut out is what will be etched.
DIY Etched Glass
Attach the stencil and paint on a thick layer of the etching cream as done earlier.
DIY Etched Glass
After they have sat for at least one minute rinse with warm water and remove the stencils. Wash with soap and you have your DIY Etched Glass

Tips:

  1. Make sure you use a thick layer of etching cream.
  2. Don’t rinse until they have sat for at least one minute.
  3. When using pre-made stencils follow package instructions.

These make great gifts. I get my glass from the dollar store! Talk about a bargain! The best part THEY ARE DISHWASHER SAFE! I always hate getting/buying things that HAVE to be hand washed. It’s so nice to be able to just pop them into the dishwasher and let it do the work.

What glass are you going to etch; what designs and themes will you use?
